The Nile River
The 6650 kilometers (4132 miles) long river, the Nile River, was one of the most important resources and natural protection the Egyptian had. Not only did the Nile River provide the Egyptians resources such as water and a plant called papyrus but it also provided the Egyptians protection from any invaders from other parts of land. This was probably the reason why the Nile River was known as the heart of Egypt. Using the Nile River as transportation, when the Egyptians were building pyramids and needed huge stones they used boats and transported the big stones from one place to another. Due to the advantage and the magnificent resources the Nile river provided, most of the cities and villages in ancient Egypt were all near the Nile river. *Picture (L)*

Q) How did the geography of Ancient Egypt help agriculture develop?
A) The geography in Ancient Egypt helped agriculture develop by providing great soil, predictable flooding and a water source. I know this because from the education portal video (M), it states; " Unlike the Tigris River, the Nile flooded predictably." The Egyptians were able to harvest and and plant crops depending on when the Nile flooded," This meant that, unlike the Mesopotamian, the Egyptians had an advantage of when the Nile flooded. So on days when the Nile flooded the Egyptians made sure not to plant any crops near that day and to harvest any crops before the flooding occurred. This helped develop agriculture because the Egyptian's farming was less likely to be a fail because they knew when the Nile was going to flood. Another reason why I think this is because from our text books it states; "Heavy rains flooded the Nile every summer and the soil left on the shore was fertile, which was great for farming," Thus, when ever the Nile flooded, it left the Egyptians with a great part of land with fertile soil which was great for farming. This part of the land was called 'black land'. This helped Ancient Egypt develop agriculture because the Egyptians were provided with great soil to farm in and so their crops were more likely to succeed. My last reason why I can conclude this is because from a website (N) it states; "the Nile provides Egyptian land with water for irrigation and the Egyptians drink the water," This means that not only did the water provided was used for drinking but also for helping plants grow. This helped agriculture develop in Ancient Egypt because the Nile river was one of the big water sources the Egyptians had and so the water was used for farming. Therefore I can conclude that the geography in Ancient Egypt helped agriculture develop by providing great soil, predictable flooding and a water source for planting and harvesting their crops efficiently.
Q) How did geography impact the ancient Egyptians?
A) Geography impact the ancient Egyptians because it protected the Egyptians, provided great resources and provided a great place for farming. One reason why I think this is because from our text book it states; “Heavy rains flooded Nile every summer and soil left on shores was fertile, this part of the land was called black land,” This meant that the soil near the Nile River was fertile and so it was great for farming. This impacts the Egyptians because it meant that they could grow crops successfully and create more surpluses to help their civilization. Another reason why I think this is because from a website (O) it states; “The 'red land' was the barren desert that protected Egypt on two sides. These deserts separated ancient Egypt from neighboring countries and invading armies. They also provided the ancient Egyptians with a source for precious metals and semi-precious stones.” This meant that the ‘red land’ both protected the Egyptians from invasion and provided resources for building pyramids and temples. This impacts the Egyptians because they were provided with precious resources and protected by natural barriers. My last reason is because from a website (P) it states; “The Nile River, for example, provided the cities with water, and transportation. There were lots of animals that lived along the river, which they could kill and eat. A water root called "Papyrus" was used to make paper, and sandals,” Thus, the Egyptians were provided with great resources which helped their civilization survive. Therefore we can conclude that Geography impact the ancient Egyptians because Egypt was surrounded by natural barriers that protected the Egyptians, the red and black land provided resources and great farming land and the Nile provided the Egyptians food, protection, and resources.
